What you Need to Know about PS TV
The PlayStation TV is a tiny box that attaches to your TV which will then let you play games and stream videos regardless of if you has a PS3 or PS4 or neither.
Here is everything that you need to know about the PS TV.
- it’s not an Alternative to Chromecast or Roku
At the moment the PS TV will not act as an alternative to Chromecast or Roku.
With the PS TV you are able to download and install the PS Vita versions of Hulu Plus, Netflix and YouTube apps, but you’re not able to run them just yet and we will need to wait for the support of these entertainment services.
- Compatible Games have been Removed
Sony released a list of PS TV compatible games which featured PSP, PS One classics, PS Vita and PlayStation Minis among others, however a lot of these games have now been removed from the list.
The games that are now missing span across all the categories. Some games that are missing off the list are Valkyria Chronicles 2, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and other titles.
3 Vita Compatibility
Not all of the PS Vita titles are compatible with the PS TV. Tearaway and Gravity Rush for instance can’t be played on the big screen, but you are able to play Child of Light, Killzone: Mercenary, Borderlands 2 and other great games with the PS TV.
- PS TV Supports DualShock 3 and PS4 Controllers
PS TV uses the same pads as the PS3 and PS4. The PS TV can be used with either of the controllers. The basic package does not come with a controller, but Sony will be selling a bundle that comes with the DualShock 3 Pad.
- Remote Play
If you have a PS4 then the PS TV will act as an extension of the PS4. The PS TV is able to stream gameplay from the PS4 to a TV. In order to do this you will need a strong Wi-Fi network in your home.
- PS TV has the Same Core Hardware as the PS Vita
The PS TV has similar internals to that of the PS Vita. It has a quad-core Cortex-A9 CPU, the Power VR SGX543MP4-plus GPU and 512MB of RAM, and can play Vita games natively.
- Stream PS/PS2/PS3 Games
One of the main draws of the PS TV is the support for PlayStation Now. You will be able to stream older PlayStation games over your homes internet connection.
- Vita Card Slot
The PS TV does have a memory card slot but it doesn’t use the standard SD format. The PS TV uses the Vita memory card type.
- PS TV does not Output in 1080p or Surround Sound
The PS TV outputs at 1080i/720p which means that the quality is slightly compromised especially for streaming videos with. The audio output is limited to two channels which means that the PS TV does not give out proper surround sound.
10. Sony Video Unlimited Streaming
There are numerous Sony streaming services such as Sony Video Unlimited and Sony Music Unlimited, but it is not clear if they will offer more popular services like Netflix.
